This motif of Sleipnir is taken from the Tjängvide image stone which is a Viking Age image stone from Tjängvide which is about three kilometers west of Ljugarn, Gotland, Sweden.
Sleipnir is Odin’s eight-legged horse who was unmatched in strength and speed. Sleipnir is one of Odin’s many shamanic helping spirits. Odin rides Sleipnir on his frequent journeys throughout the Nine Worlds, which are held in the branches and roots of the world-tree Yggdrasil.
The eight-legged horse as a means of transportation used by shamans in their ecstatic travels throughout the cosmos is a motif that can be found in a staggering number of indigenous traditions from all over the world.
For modern Vikings, Sleipnir often represents the ability to move through life with confidence and the way that each of us straddles different worlds through the different roles we play in life.
